I get asked a lot about tweeting out website links and how to make them “less ugly.” My favorite tool for this is called Bit.ly. Bit.ly is a website that allows you to paste a long URL like this: http://socialimpression.net/understanding-the-different-types-of-facebook-ads/ and turn it into something short and sweet like this: . Go ahead – click both links, you will end up at the same spot.
The best part – Well, there are two best parts. The first is that Bit.ly is totally free to use and you can sign up simply by visiting their website. The second best part is that once you have signed up for a free account you can then track how many times your shortened link is clicked. Pretty cool!
With their iPhone app whenever you copy a URL from your iPhone internet browser and then open the Bit.ly app it will ask you if you want to shorten whatever URL you just copied. This makes sharing links from your mobile device super easy.
So go ahead and click on over to Bit.ly and sign up for an account for free, paste in that long ugly non-social media friendly URL and watch the magic happen!
There are a bunch of other link shorteners out there, but Bit.ly is my favorite.
Hope this helps!
