There’s a specific kind of excitement that comes with a new tool that promises to do everything. You know the feeling. Someone shares it in a Slack channel or on TikTok, and the comments fill up fast, and suddenly it feels like you’re the last person at the party who hasn’t tried it yet.
That was OpenClaw in early 2026.
Originally called ClawdBot, then briefly Moltbot (Anthropic wasn’t thrilled about the name), OpenClaw is an open-source AI agent that runs on your computer 24/7 and connects to your messaging apps, your email, your files, your calendar, and basically anything else you’re willing to hand it the keys to. It watches for your instructions, then acts on them. Autonomously. While you’re not looking. Think of it as Claude with hands, which is actually how security researchers at Token Security described it, and that description is worth sitting with for a minute.
The tool became the fastest-growing GitHub repository in recent memory, crossing 100,000 stars faster than any other project in the platform’s history. Solopreneurs loved it. Productivity enthusiasts were building elaborate workflows with it. Tech media was calling it a glimpse into the future of personal computing.
And then Summer Yue, the director of safety and alignment at Meta Superintelligence, watched it delete her inbox in real time.
She had told it to “confirm before acting.” It did not confirm. It just started deleting. She couldn’t stop it from her phone. She had to physically run to her Mac mini, she said, “like I was defusing a bomb.” When someone asked if it was a rookie mistake, she was refreshingly honest: “Rookie mistake tbh. Turns out alignment researchers aren’t immune to misalignment.”
I’m not sharing this to make you afraid of AI automation. I’m sharing it because Summer Yue is one of the most qualified people on the planet to understand AI behavior, and it still happened to her. That’s not a cautionary tale about incompetence. That’s a cautionary tale about the gap between what these tools feel like and what they actually are.
And that gap matters a lot more if you’re running a supplement brand, a political campaign, or any other business where one wrong message can blow up your compliance standing, reputation, or relationship with regulators.
What OpenClaw Actually Does (and Why It’s Genuinely Impressive)
To be fair to the tool, the appeal is real. OpenClaw connects to WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord, Slack, and your email, and lets you have a single persistent AI assistant that follows you across all of them. You can ask it to manage your inbox, schedule things, browse the web, write code, run terminal commands, and chain all of those tasks together without you having to babysit each step. For a solo operator managing fifteen moving pieces, that sounds like relief.
I get it. We use AI every day at Social Impressions, and it’s made us faster and sharper on things that used to eat up hours. So this isn’t about being skeptical of automation as a concept.
It’s about understanding what you’re actually handing the wheel to.
I’ve been doing this for fifteen years. I’ve watched the social media space go through more hype cycles than I can count, from the “post three times a day and watch your business explode” era to the “one viral video will change everything” promises to the AI tools that now claim they’ll run your entire marketing operation while you sleep.
The pitch is almost always the same: skip the hard part, get to the result faster. And every single time, the people who get burned are the ones who believed the shortcut was the strategy.
Here’s what I’ve learned: the boring stuff is almost always the most important stuff. The stuff that doesn’t make a good Instagram caption. The planning, the documentation, the process mapping, the human checkpoints. The decision about what your brand will and won’t say, and who reviews it before it goes anywhere. That groundwork isn’t glamorous, but it’s what keeps you on the mountain instead of sliding off it.
Because the hype machine, whether it’s a get-rich-quick scheme, a pyramid scheme, or a shiny new AI tool that promises to automate everything, is usually showing you the tip of the mountain. It looks close. It looks achievable. What it doesn’t show you is how steep the climb is, what you need to pack, or what happens if you didn’t plan the route carefully before you started moving.
OpenClaw is a genuinely powerful tool. It is also a very steep mountain for anyone who skips the prep work.
Security researchers at Cisco described it as “groundbreaking” from a capabilities perspective and “an absolute nightmare” from a security perspective, and both can be true at the same time. A security audit conducted in January 2026 identified 512 vulnerabilities in OpenClaw, eight of which were classified as critical.
Researcher Jamieson O’Reilly was able to gain access to Anthropic API keys, Telegram bot tokens, Slack accounts, and complete chat histories from misconfigured instances, and could execute commands with full system administrator privileges. By late January, security analysts at Bitsight were observing more than 30,000 OpenClaw instances exposed on the public internet, many running with no authentication whatsoever. OpenClaw also has a “skills” marketplace called ClawHub, essentially a plugin store where users can install new capabilities. In late January, security researchers at Koi Security discovered a supply chain attack they called ClawHavoc: attackers had uploaded convincing-looking skills that, when installed, quietly deployed malware and handed over complete API key access. Because OpenClaw’s API keys control what the agent can access, a compromised skill means full remote control over everything connected to it. The OpenClaw team has moved fast to patch these issues. Over 40 vulnerabilities were fixed in a single release, and as of early March there are no known unpatched critical CVEs. That’s genuinely impressive responsiveness. But as security analysts at Conscia noted, the architectural issue remains: you are granting an autonomous agent high-level privileges, which means a misconfiguration or a bad skill can escalate quickly, and the agent won’t necessarily ask first.
One of OpenClaw’s own maintainers said it plainly in the project’s Discord: “If you can’t understand how to run a command line, this is far too dangerous a project for you to use safely.”
That sentence is doing a lot of work.
What Responsible Implementation Actually Looks Like
Brian Anderson, Enterprise Architect at Emergent Software, has seen this play out firsthand with clients building real AI workflows. His take cuts right to it: “The most common mistake is skipping the unglamorous prep work: process mapping and accountable business ownership. If you don’t map decisions, exceptions, and controls, agents get connected to live email/CRM/invoicing workflows and end up automating low-value but high-risk actions, acting where humans should still be thinking.”
His description of what responsible implementation looks like is, as he puts it, “boring by design: map the workflow, draw clear autonomy boundaries, apply least-privilege access, gate high-impact steps with human approval, stage the rollout, and instrument the system with audit logs and an easy off switch.”
Boring by design. I love that framing because it’s exactly right, and it’s the opposite of how almost every new AI tool gets sold to you.
The get-rich-quick version of AI automation is: connect it to everything, let it run, watch the time savings roll in. The actual version is: map every decision the tool will make, decide where a human still needs to be in the loop, limit what it can touch, and make sure you can shut it off cleanly if something goes wrong.
The second version doesn’t make a great product demo. But it’s the one that keeps your business intact.
That easy off switch, by the way, is the part Summer Yue really could have used.
Why This Matters More in High-Stakes Industries
I spend most of my days working with clients in regulated and sensitive spaces: supplements, alternative lending, nondestructive testing training, political campaigns. These are industries where a single compliance misstep can trigger a platform ban, an FTC inquiry, or a news cycle nobody planned for.
In those environments, communications need a human checkpoint. Not because AI isn’t useful, but because the cost of a mistake is not symmetrical. The upside of saving an hour is real. The downside of auto-posting a health claim that violates FTC guidelines, or sending a message to the wrong list at the wrong time, is not recoverable by lunchtime.
OpenClaw’s autonomy, the thing that makes it exciting, is exactly what makes it risky in these spaces. It doesn’t always pause to ask. It acts. And if it’s connected to your social accounts, your email, and your messaging platforms, it’s acting on behalf of your brand, your voice, and your compliance posture. That’s a lot to trust to a tool that, even at its best, can misinterpret an instruction the same way Summer Yue’s did.
Beyond compliance, there’s the straightforward security picture. If you’re a public figure, a founder with a visible platform, or someone whose inbox contains sensitive client or employee data, an exposed OpenClaw instance isn’t just an IT problem. It’s a liability. Researcher O’Reilly’s work showed that full chat histories were accessible in misconfigured deployments. Those conversations don’t belong only to you.
OpenClaw is a genuinely impressive piece of technology. The vision behind it, a persistent AI agent that moves through your digital life and handles real tasks autonomously, is where a lot of AI is heading. The team behind it is building fast and patching responsibly, and the tool has legitimate use cases for technically sophisticated users in low-stakes environments.
But if you’re running a regulated brand, managing a public platform, or working in an industry where your communications carry compliance weight, think carefully before connecting an autonomous agent to the accounts that matter. Do Brian’s “boring work” first. Map the workflow. Draw the boundaries. Apply the least-privilege access. Build in the human approval gates. And make sure you have the off switch ready before you ever need it.
The mountain is real. The view from the top is probably worth it. But the people who make it there safely are almost never the ones who skipped the planning because the summit looked close.
Speed is a real competitive advantage. So is not having to explain to your compliance attorney why your AI agent sent something it shouldn’t have.
